All eligible backers will get the Tides of Numenera beta during the week of January 17th.
The beta is supposed to be fairly long, starting players off with the introductory sequence and a significant chunk of the first major location – Sagus Cliffs. It’s a city location, split into five main districts – Circus Minor, Cliff’s Edge, Caravanserai, Government Square and the Underbelly. Naturally, it’s supposed to be bursting at the seams with lore, NPCs, and quests.
Also interesting is that the update came with information on the game’s items – regular, ordinary items (like weapons and armour, and so on) and Numenera. Which in turn, are subdivided into Oddities, Artifacts and Cyphers.
It’s the mechanics behind Cyphers that interests me the most. They’re one-time-use Numenera that aren’t meant to be hoarded and carried around en masse. Find one, use one, and you’ll get the benefits of it. Carry a bunch of them around and they’ll start interacting with each other, resulting in negative status effects for your character.
As Thomas Beekers, Associate Producer/Designer on Tides of Numenera put it, “By their very nature, Cyphers counter the hoarding instincts that cRPGs have built up over the years.”
I thoroughly approve.
For the inXile’s entire update, head on over here. Oh, and here are a couple of screens that were released with the update.
